Paolo Maldini Reveals How Messi Almost Joined AC Milan

Paolo Maldini Reveals How Messi Almost Joined AC Milan. Legendary ex AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini has revealed how the club almost signed Argentina captain and World Cup winner, Lionel Messi.

This is after his shocking exit from Barcelona in 2021. Apparently Messi ended up joining French side, PSG where he had a mixed stint of emotions.

According to Maldini he tried to bring the now 8 time Ballon d’Or winner to the San Siro. However, PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo told him that the Parisians were in advanced talks with the 36 year old.

“We tried to sign Messi when he was free after Barça, when he left the club in August”.

“We called and we tired but it remained an idea… just because Leonardo told me PSG were ahead and already in advanced talks to sign Messi”.

Messi spent two years at PSG and eventually left in the summer of the current season to MLS side, Inter Miami. The former Barcelona captain had an instant impact winning David Beckham’s side their first ever trophy.

Meanwhile, Maldini who is arguably the Rossoneri’s biggest legend left the club at the end of last season. This is after he fell out with the hierarchy especially the president, Paolo Scaroni.

According to Maldini, he still loves the club but it’s important to respect players like him. The club should keep them around and not push the away. Additionally, the Champions League winner said that he was told how the club had no funds. However, when he left the funds doubles. Paolo Maldini Reveals How Messi Almost Joined AC Milan
