Reagan Mpande keeps SC Villa title hopes alive with late winner

Reagan Mpande, who scored the game-winning goal in SC Villa’s 3-2 triumph over Wakiso Giants at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, was the hero of the second half comeback.

Due to goals from Samson Kigozi and Hassan Ssenyonjo, the record Uganda Premier League champions had a dismal start to the season. The Purple Sharks took the lead through Kigozi in the opening frame, and in the 52nd minute, Ssenyonjo doubled their lead.

Kenneth Kimera was the culprit for squandering two great goalkeeper opportunities that would have allowed Wakiso to score additional goals in the first half.

In the 66th minute, Ronald Ssekiganda spearheaded a comeback with a strong header off of a perfectly placed cross by Gavin Kizito Mugweri.

Ten minutes into the second half, replacement Umar Lutalo tied the score with a penalty kick. Reagan Mpande, who had been fed by Patrick Jonah Kakande, finished the incredible comeback in the 87th minute.

Wakiso Giants remain in 12th place with 29 points, while SC Villa moves up to third place with 48 points, just one point behind leaders BUL FC.

Next up for SC Villa is a trip to relegation-threatened UPDF FC, while on Saturday, May 11, Wakiso Giants will host Mbarara City.
